Author: Doreen Cronin
Illustrator: Betsy Lewin

Summary: Click, Clack, Surprise! is the follow-up to Click, Clack, Peep! It’s Little Duck’s first birthday and she has no idea how to get ready for it. Follow her as she tries to figure out how to prepare by observing all of her barnyard friends.
What Teacher-Librarian Me Thinks: I have to admit, I’ve been a huge fan of Cronin’s humor since I first picked up Diary of a Worm in college. If you are looking for a book rich in onomatopoeias, this is it! It makes sense too, given that Cronin explained at the 2016 National Book Festival that her writing process begins with sounds and not an idea. Lewin’s bright and simple water colors perfectly capture Cronin’s text, especially the final outcome of Little Duck’s party preparations. This story would serve well for a lesson on story sequencing and is best suited for children in preschool through second grade.
What Mom Me Thinks: It’s a fun read for both child and adult. Cronin’s humor, as well as Lewin’s final illustration of Little Duck, will have the whole family laughing. You will surely relate to some of Little Duck’s antics as she tries to emulate some of her older counterparts on the farm.
It’s no wonder this is one of his favorite parts! He sees it all the time around our house!
What Lil’ Man Thinks: He says this book is “great!” His favorite part of the book is the picture of Little Duck after she has prepared for the party. He also gets the giggles at some of Cronin’s onomatopoeias and he especially likes the cat’s “slurp-a-lurps” while bathing (probably because we have 3 cats of our own that do the same).
